Tailored Investment Management Services Guide

On this page

Discover how tailored investment management services can help coordinate your personal assets and employer benefits into a cohesive retirement income strategy.

Your retirement strategy should not look like a carbon copy of your neighbor's plan. Employer benefits and personal assets often feel like two puzzles that do not quite fit together, and a generic model tends to leave that gap unresolved.

Tailored investment management means a portfolio built around your goals, your timeline, and your risk tolerance rather than a template. This article covers what that involves, how it connects to income and employer benefits, and what to ask a prospective firm.

Investment advisory services at Cadence Capital Investments are offered through Prosperity Financial, a Registered Investment Advisor, which acts in a fiduciary capacity for those advisory services. The firm is fee-based: an affiliate may earn commissions on certain insurance and annuity products, which is a conflict of interest and is disclosed before any recommendation.

Key takeaways

• A customized portfolio reflects your spending timeline, not a standard allocation model.

• Investment decisions interact with Social Security timing, tax treatment, and employer benefits.

• Several elections in this process are effectively permanent.

• Annuities are insurance contracts, not investments, and guarantees depend on the issuing company.

What tailored management means

Tailored investment management means the portfolio is built to fund a specific set of expenses over a specific period, rather than sorted into a risk bucket and left there. It coordinates allocation decisions with income needs and tax treatment.

Why it matters more approaching retirement

Someone ten years from retirement faces a different problem than someone thirty years out. The capacity to absorb a decline changes when withdrawals begin, because selling into a decline liquidates more shares for the same cash.

A portfolio built for accumulation and a portfolio built to support withdrawals are structured differently. That is the substance of the customization, not a questionnaire.

How compensation works here

We charge a fee for advice and planning. An affiliate may earn commissions on certain products, primarily insurance and annuities.

An annuity is a contract with an insurance company designed to produce a stream of payments. It is not an investment, and any guarantees are subject to the claims-paying ability of the issuing company. Purchasing an annuity, like a pension election, is generally irreversible, which is why those decisions get modeled before they get made.

What the work looks like

These are approaches, not performance claims, and none of them guarantees a result. All investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal.

Income-focused structure

This balances growth holdings against more stable instruments so that near-term spending does not depend on recent market results. Withdrawal rate is the percentage of the portfolio drawn each year, and the sequence across account types affects the tax owed.

Tax-aware management

Roth conversions move funds from a traditional IRA or 401(k) into a Roth. You pay ordinary income tax on the converted amount in the year of the move. Qualified withdrawals are generally tax-free once you are 59 and a half and the account has satisfied the five-year requirement. Conversions cannot be undone, so the arithmetic belongs before the move.

Asset location places holdings in taxable or tax-advantaged accounts based on how each is taxed.

Neither is tax advice. Work both through with your CPA.

Managing concentration and downside

Diversification spreads holdings across asset classes and sectors. It is a method for managing risk. It does not guarantee against loss and does not protect against a declining market.

Coordinating with income

Social Security

Claiming age changes the monthly amount permanently and changes how much the portfolio has to supply. Claiming at 62 produces a reduced benefit; delaying past full retirement age increases it to age 70. Your own figures are at SSA.gov.

There is a limited window to withdraw an application within twelve months of first entitlement, which requires repaying benefits received and is available once. Treat the decision as permanent.

Insurance

Insurance addresses risks a portfolio does not, including long-term care. Guarantees are subject to the claims-paying ability of the issuing company. These are evaluated as part of the plan rather than as separate purchases.

Distributions and RMDs

Required Minimum Distributions are set by the Internal Revenue Code and administered by the IRS. Under current law they generally begin at age 73, rising to 75 for later birth years. These ages are statutory and subject to change; IRS.gov publishes current rules. This is not tax advice.

Employer benefits in the East Bay

Many local professionals hold a substantial share of their wealth inside employer plans, and several of those decisions are made once.

Separation at or after age 55. Where you separate from service in or after the calendar year you turn 55, distributions from that employer's qualified plan may avoid the additional 10 percent early distribution tax. Ordinary income tax still applies, and the relief does not follow assets into an IRA.

Net Unrealized Appreciation. Where appreciated employer stock sits in a qualified plan, an NUA election applies ordinary income treatment to the cost basis, with the appreciation taxed at long-term capital gains rates when sold. It requires a lump sum distribution of the entire vested balance within one tax year and an in-kind transfer of the shares to a taxable account. Tax on the basis is due in the year of transfer, the 3.8 percent Net Investment Income Tax may apply on a later sale, and the election is generally irreversible. It also leaves a concentrated position.

Pension elections. The choice between a monthly payment form and a lump sum is generally final once payment begins.

Plan provisions change. Confirm current terms with your plan administrator and your summary plan description before any election. This is not tax advice.

Choosing a firm

Ask these, and ask for the answers in writing:

Which of your services carry a fiduciary duty, and which do not?

A service-by-service answer naming the registered entity behind each.

How are you compensated across every service line?

Advisory fees, any commissions, and the underlying costs of recommended investments.

What conflicts exist in your structure, and how are they managed?

Every structure has some.

How often do we meet, and what do I receive in writing?

May I have your Form ADV Part 2A and Form CRS?

Then verify independently through FINRA BrokerCheck and the SEC's Investment Adviser Public Disclosure database.

Take a second opinion on anything irreversible. A firm confident in its analysis has no reason to discourage one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between fee-based and fee-only?

Fee-only means client fees are the sole source of compensation anywhere in the firm or its affiliates. Fee-based means client fees plus commissions earned somewhere in the structure. Cadence Capital Investments is fee-based: an affiliate may earn commissions on insurance and annuity products. That conflict is disclosed before any recommendation and described in our Form CRS.

How does the fiduciary standard apply here?

It applies to the investment advisory services provided through Prosperity Financial. It is a service-level duty rather than a firm-wide label, which is why it is worth asking any firm to identify which of its services the duty covers and which are governed by a different standard.

What makes a portfolio "tailored" rather than standard?

That it is built around what the money has to do and when. Two households with identical balances but different spending timelines, other income sources, and employer benefits should not hold identical portfolios. The customization is in the structure, not in the product selection.

Are annuities investments?

No. An annuity is an insurance contract designed to produce payments. Any guarantees depend on the claims-paying ability of the issuing company rather than on market performance. Annuities carry fees, expenses, and surrender terms that warrant review before purchase, and an affiliate may earn a commission on one we recommend.
